Unlocking the potential of blockchain: Insights from the first London Blockchain Conference webinar

Kate Baucherel and Helen Disney on London Blockchain Webinar

The London Blockchain Conference team recently launched an engaging webinar series to demystify blockchain technology. The first installment, held on 12 December 2024, offered practical insights and actionable advice to help enterprises and governments begin their blockchain journeys. Hosted by Alex Stein (Conference Director of the London Blockchain Conference),  the webinar also featured leading blockchain experts Kate Baucherel and Helen Disney.

Demystifying blockchain technology

Baucherel, a digital strategy consultant, explained blockchain fundamentals with relatable analogies. Describing it as a ‘peer-to-peer electronic cash system,’ she likened blockchain to traditional accounting ledgers, where blocks represent pages, and each page links to the next securely. She highlighted that blockchain ensures trust through immutability, making fraudulent alterations virtually impossible.

She further simplified the technology, describing blockchain as a ‘ball of nodes’ with no central authority. Transactions are broadcast across the network, recorded in new blocks, and maintained with consensus algorithms.

Blockchain in action

Disney showcased blockchain’s versatility across industries several industries, including:

  • Supply Chain: Track and verify goods’ authenticity and ethical sourcing.
  • Healthcare: Ensure secure and transparent management of patient records.
  • Energy: Optimise distribution and consumption.
  • Gaming and Collectibles: Manage digital assets and in-game economies.
  • Finance: Streamline cross-border payments and financial transactions.
  • Fashion: Authenticate luxury items and promote sustainability.
  • Music Streaming: Automate royalty payments and improve creator compensation.

Disney also addressed blockchain’s ability to enhance transparency, such as verifying supply chain activities or automating financial processes.

Tackling Challenges

Disney introduced the blockchain trilemma, which balances security, scalability, and decentralisation. Businesses must choose the right blockchain type—public, private, or hybrid—to suit their needs. Public blockchains offer openness and robust security, while private blockchains provide controlled environments tailored for corporate use. Hybrid models blend the best of both worlds.

The duo also discussed other issues facing blockchain adoption – including environmental concerns. Blockchain’s energy consumption is a common criticism, but Baucherel explained how advancements in green energy solutions and efficient consensus mechanisms are mitigating these issues. Newer protocols are up to 99% more energy-efficient, enabling sustainable blockchain operations.

Is blockchain right for your business?

Disney emphasised the importance of evaluating whether blockchain aligns with a company’s goals. While private blockchains prioritise security and privacy, public blockchains, with their vast networks, often offer superior scalability and decentralisation. Hybrid solutions like JP Morgan’s Quorum are gaining traction, bridging public and private elements for specialised use cases.

As the industry matures, innovations like smart contracts, decentralised apps (DApps), and tokenisation are driving the transition to Web3—a blockchain-powered internet era. Web3 aims to embed decentralisation into everyday activities, offering unprecedented transparency and efficiency.
